Tuscany’s Prato Textile District, standing as one of the largest textile hubs in Europe, has recently undergone an unprecedented demographic and industrial transformation, effectively becoming a unique intersection between traditional European manufacturing and contemporary Chinese globalisation due to nearly a quarter of its residents being of Chinese origin (Italian Fashion Sourcing, 2025). Although past public debate frequently framed this demographic shift as a threat to the prestigious Made in Italy brand, the district now operates on a sophisticated model of functional complementarity where Italian companies focus on the upstream sector involving high quality fabrics and recycled materials, while enterprises led by Chinese entrepreneurs dominate the downstream sector through activities such as assembly and fast fashion (DW, 2025; China Daily, 2024).
