EU R&D for the development of Small Modular Reactors: an energy security perspective

The political debate on energy security at the European level has gained salience in recent years, given the latest geopolitical and macroeconomic upheavals in the energy sector. First the Covid pandemic, then the Ukraine war and now the economic ripples of the most recent crisis in the Persian Gulf region are going to impact European industrial capacity and energy availability once again. The Commission is aware of its difficult strategic positioning, and in the last five years there has been a surge of initiatives that try to tackle such issues: REPowerEU, the Critical Raw Materials Act, the Net-Zero Industry Act and the latest EU Grids Package, among others. One of the solutions that the Commission envisioned to achieve its climate objectives and the green energy transition is to bet on the development of a new technology design known as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
