On February 1, 2021, just hours before the inauguration of the newly elected parliament, Myanmar’s Vice President Myint Swe announced the detention and removal of President U Win Myint and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi. In the hours that followed, the military seized control of all branches of government — executive, legislative, and judicial—effectively ending the country’s fragile democratic transition. What followed was not a return to authoritarian stability, but the beginning of one of the most complex and enduring civil conflicts in Myanmar’s modern history (Fumagalli, 2021).
