The strange friendship between Italy and Libya

In August 2008, when Silvio Berlusconi returned the Venus of Cyrene to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi – or more precisely, handed back a statue taken to Italy during Libya’s colonial period – it signaled that he had an agenda (Ronzitti, 2009, p. 125). This gesture was not merely about the restitution of an artefact; it marked the conclusion of lengthy negotiations that culminated in the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Partnership, and Cooperation between Italy and Libya. Although the history of their relationship is complex, a connection between the two countries has always persisted.
