The EU Asylum and Migration Pact: fortified border control or securitized internal circulation?

On April 10th, 2024, the European Parliament has adopted the Asylum and Migration Pact, an international agreement designed to streamline the EU’s migration regulatory system. It will equip Schengen Area’s countries with innovative tools for a more efficient control of their borders, including enhanced migrants’ screening and more efficient identity checks. Nevertheless, a strengthening of European borders’ entry rules could undermine migrants’ human rights, such as the right to privacy and data protection. This could result in possible unjustified rejections stemming from the strict access conditions imposed by the EU.
